India has started efforts to return the Kohinoor diamond from Britain before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Last Saturday, such a report was published in a British tabloid. According to information published in British tabloids, the Indian embassies in New Delhi and London have begun diplomatic efforts to this end. Not only Kohinoor, India wants to officially bring back to this country other valuable treasures in various collections of Britain.
According to British diplomatic sources, they will not return Kohinoor to India at all. But yes, there have been talks about returning some of the items in British collections to India, official documents have also been produced. But there is no mention of Kohinoor in that document.
The topic of discussion across the country since Saturday was the 105.6 carat Kohinoor diamond housed in the British Museum, one of the world’s largest collections in London. Many are smelling politics behind New Delhi’s move to bring back Kohinoor. A section of politicians feel that after the BJP’s debacle in the Karnataka polls, the BJP government may resort to Kohinoor to dust off the new nationalism in the country. In fact, Narendra Modi will promote it as his success if he can bring back the Kohinoor.
